How to reinvent your wardrobe.

Gone are the days of the traditional almirah and cupboards. Welcome to the age of modular wardrobes. A modern counterpart designed to provide you with not just extra storage, but allow you to have a space that is uniquely yours. Something we at Würfel, are happy to bring alive.  Here are some ideas on customizing your wardrobe to the next level.

Plan before you pick

Before deciding on your wardrobe, sort out your clothes and accessories. This makes it easier to judge how much space you need – based on the number of dresses, shirts, trousers, jackets, shoes, and so on. This will give you a clear idea of how you want your wardrobe organized and help in deciding what type of wardrobe will suit your best – a hinged wardrobe, sliding or a walk-in or what all accessories need to be considered.

De-clutter with drawers

Drawers are a perfect way to store smaller accessories like ties, belts, scarves, t-shirts & folded shirts. You also get special hanging accessories for your belts and ties. It keeps all your items organized and makes it easily accessible, instead of being hidden away or on hangers with the rest of your clothes. By using dividers in drawers, or an accessory like the velvet organizer, you can further customize it, so as to avoid a jumble-up between items like ties, cufflinks, and belts. Drawers can also come with closed sides and open sides. Open sides allow you to have a visibility from the side as well making it easier to pick

Make space for hanging space

For the fashionistas with a wide collection of tops, jumpers, denim, jackets, and so on, we recommend having two hanging wardrobe rails. For minimalist hipsters, a single rail will work equally well. Else, there’s always the option of a pull-down hanger – a rod that brings the entire hanger down and out of the wardrobe- making it easier to access and sort.

Add extra shelving

Add space at the end of your wardrobe or under a hanging rail, using open shelves. Wardrobes with shelves provide an ideal storage solution for jumpers, handbags, and other style accessories. What’s more, the shelves don’t all have to be the same size. Your deeper shelves can be above waist height, and the shallower shelves at the bottom can be used to store your shoes. These can also be tilted, giving you a boutique look to your wardrobe. This mix of shelves helps in better visibility and brings a structure to your wardrobe. Additionally, accessories like shoe racks that come as vertical or horizontal further help to de-clutter footwear storage.  Such is the beauty of having custom wardrobes.

Storage basket

Doing laundry can be a chore, but having the right laundry basket should help. Consider pull-out baskets – these provide ample storage and are an ideal solution to managing the household laundry. Another option you can look at, are baskets with wheels. These make those trips to the washing machine, a tad faster.

Slide for style

Sliding doors offer a great solution for smaller-sized bedrooms – improving your decor of the entire home. You could also consider having mirrored doors which will make the room feel much bigger and reflect more light. However sliding system locking systems are not the best of security.

Trouser Racks

Trouser rack is one of the best utility for a wardrobe to do neat storage of trousers, jeans, etc. It allows you to pull the whole stack out of the wardrobe and sort like a page. So gone are the days when the bottom stacked trousers lies there for ever.

Shoe Racks

There are different forms of show racks pullout accessories availbale for better arrangement and sorting of your shoes.

6 tips to decorate a small kitchen.

The kitchen is the heart of every home – no matter the size. Here are some simple kitchen decor ideas and designs, to turn your kitchen into a warm and welcoming space for the entire family.

1. Choose space-savers

Storage in small kitchens can prove quite challenging, and call for smart space-saving solutions. In such cases, we recommend using custom-made pantry ladders, pull out drawers and tower units. These not only add functionality to your space but in turn, free up more space in the kitchen.

2. Use lighter tones

The right lighting can make all the difference in making space feel larger than it is.

When dealing with a smaller kitchen, avoid cherry dark cabinets and darker shades.

Lighter shades make the room appear brighter and bigger. A slightly more flamboyant option would be installing LED strips under shelves and cabinets.

3. Unclutter your space

Minimizing clutter goes a long way in transforming a kitchen space. The saved space, in turn, helps create possibilities for hanging works of art – like a painting or textured pots and vases.

4. Try accessories from nature

Adding a touch of green through indoor plants help bring a natural warmth to the kitchen. Pots can take up an unnecessary amount of space though, so we recommend using a pot rack to keep them up and out-of-the-way. This gives you extra storage while also incorporating the pots into the kitchen.

5. Make a bold splash

A simple, yet effective way to decorate the kitchen is to work on the Dado area. What is the Dado area?  The space between the base and wall cabinets. A splash of colour in this space can do wonders for your kitchen’s aesthetic appeal.

6. Add some art

Hanging art on your walls is a simple way to personalize your space. A contemporary painting or a mix of vintage works, or even personal gallery-style photos can change the mood and be an effective decoration. While it’s up to you to choose between a single large piece or a collection of smaller ones, we’d recommend one large painting. As this creates one large focal point, which works wonders in a small kitchen.

How to deal with blind corner cabinets

Blind corner cabinets are cabinets nestled in the corner of the kitchen, wherever there is a formation of L Shape cabinets. Often referred to as the Bermuda Triangle of kitchens owing to the difficulty with which you need to find objects stored in them, it’s an area that needs to be handled with tact and careful planning. The depth of the cabinets on either side of the corner makes access to the end become difficult and that’s where you need an innovative solution. Enter, Wurfel. Here are four ways you can tackle the corner issue.

1. Shelf Cabinets

We start with the simplest and most cost-effective way – the shelf cabinet. Here, the depth of the cabinet is 1250 or 1100 mm and the shutter opens at 600 or 450mm respectively – giving you single-door access.

2. Leman’s corner

The second option is, the ‘Leman’s corner’ – this consists of 2 swing out trays, giving you access to more of the objects stacked inside. These are again available in widths of 1250 and 1100 mm.

3. The Magic Corner

The third, most space-friendly option is known as the ‘’Magic corner’’. Called ‘magic’ because opening the door brings the entire contents of the cupboard all at once, this arrangement consists of a set of split trays that easily slide out from the cabinet – ensuring maximum accessibility for the corner unit. This is available in width sizes of 1200 and 1100 mm.

All the above solutions are designed for base cabinets. In addition to these, Wurfel also offers other ways to deal with the corner:

45-degree corner cabinet – The 45-degree corner cabinet chamfers the corner to a 45-degree angle, making space for a shutter and ensuring easy access to all parts of the corner.

Corner Towers  These tall units provide ample storage for the corner – available in 1500, 1940, 2160 mm by height.

For the techies and people looking for automated solutions, we recommend the dead corner kitchen storage lift. Using this method, the entire corner automatically moves up simply at the push of a button.

Where there’s a corner, there’s a challenge. A challenge that we at Wurfel are happy to embrace through the only way we know how – innovation.

Kitchen work triangles in modern design.

The kitchen work triangle is a concept that was developed back in the 1940’s, at a time when kitchens were compact, and appliances, large. The triangle connects 3 main work areas within the kitchen – the stove, the sink, and the refrigerator. The rule goes as follows – the distance between these three areas should be between 4 feet and 9 feet, no more and no less, with the sum of the three sides lying between 13 feet and 26 feet.

Put simply, it’s a way to ensure that the cook doesn’t have to walk miles while cooking – just pivot from place to place between preparation and cooking.

However, in the last decade or so, homes have evolved and how. Today, with the rise of modular kitchens and new technology, the kitchen is like a relaxed hub, a big part of the home. Gone are the days of one person running the show. We now see more husbands helping out their wives, children hanging around, and even multiple cooks working at any given point. In essence, the kitchen has become more of a family space.

It’s why most kitchens these days have an open floor plan, and why, on average they are much larger than those in the past. Complete with kitchen islands, ovens, wine coolers, and microwaves. The original triangle, while once the norm, is now stretched beyond recognition.

To adapt, kitchen design experts now recommend ‘kitchen work zones’ rather than triangles. where individual “stations” fulfill different activities, like cooking, preparing, cleaning, and food storage. Like the triangle, this approach also focuses on workflow: store the proper equipment and supplies in their respective zones and you’re less apt to waste time tracking them down.

With the zone approach, you also avoid bumping elbows with others who share the same space but are doing something completely different. That’s not to say we’re throwing the triangle concept out the window, but merely adapting it in a different form with the kitchen zone. When choosing to remodel, the most important consideration to take in to is asking yourself what your space will allow for, who will use it, how you will use it, and how it can best be configured to meet your needs.

Introducing greenery to your kitchen

When it comes to improving home decor, houseplants have been quite the trend in the last
couple of years. While previously restricted to just balconies, nowadays they seem to have
taken over every room in our homes, adding an organic touch and bringing the outdoors in. It’s
a trend which is here to stay, and one that definitely deserves a place in the kitchen.

Not only do houseplants serve as beautiful and sustainable home decor, but they can also help
purify your air. Plus, studies find that plants increase morale and productivity — two things we
can all get more of in the kitchen. Being a modular kitchen brand that believes in utilizing
every nook and corner in your kitchen, here are five plants we recommend bringing in, that is
sure to breathe some life into your kitchen.

The Spider Plant

The spider plant is capable of thriving under a variety of conditions, and doesn’t require much
care at all. Keep this plant anywhere in your kitchen — by the window in the sun, or on the
countertop underneath overhead cabinets — and watch it grow with the help of occasional
waterings and infrequent pruning. It makes for a great natural air purifier and helps removes
fumes and pollutants in the kitchen.

Aloe Vera

A beautiful and distinctive-looking plant filled with vitamins and minerals that are great for your
skin, having a potted aloe vera is like having 24/7 access to a pharmacy. Keep it next to the
stove and it will come in handy the next time you inevitably burn yourself. Just cut off a lower leaf
near the stalk, remove any spines along the edge, and squeeze out the gel-filled interior. Rub
the gel right on the burn and you’ll feel almost instant cooling effects.

Chinese Evergreens

A hybrid of two other tropical plants, the Chinese evergreen is an adaptable house plant
capable of growing in dry, low-light conditions. It’s great for removing toxins in the air and is
another plant that requires little care.

Aluminum Plant

This one’s for those who are big on appliances. The aluminum plant’s green and metallic silver
leaves will be a fitting addition. Keep this in a hanging basket and away from hot or cold objects.
The aluminum plant’s main appeal in the kitchen is its coloring. Add to the fact that it’s a hanging
plant means you’ll save valuable counter space.

Cast Iron Plant
Add an unusual cast iron piece to your kitchen in the form of this hearty, hassle-free houseplant.
Bright green and leafy, the cast iron plant can tolerate much more than your average house
plant, including extremely low light, extreme and fluctuating heat, and infrequent watering.
Making it perfectly capable of surviving any climate in the kitchen – whether it’s the humidity
from simmering stove tops or the heat from the hours of the oven being on.

Choosing the right colour for your kitchen.

You’ve picked out a kitchen without any incident. Your spouse and you are feeling pretty smug about your choice. It’s a world-class European design, there’s ample amounts of cabinet storage space and it’s just what you pictured for your home. You cast judgemental looks at the couple fighting down the aisle. It’s all very rosy and happily ever after. And then it happens. The small matter of deciding which colour to go with?

Among the reservoir of husband-wife arguments, picking a colour ranks somewhere near the top. It’s a time when underhand tactics like emotional blackmailing and digging up past arguments come to the fore. Crimson red or vermilion red? Lemon yellow or royal yellow? It’s a tough call, considering the ideal shade is somewhere that’s a little bit of both, and on top of that,
retailers only offer a limited range of colours. So someone (the husband) always has to compromise.

For such couples, we have some good news. Wurfel now offers infinite shades to choose from, available on any modular kitchen you buy from us. Whether you want it to match with those beige curtains, or your favourite pink sari, we’ve got it all. Just walk in to your nearest Wurfel showroom and tell us which colour you’d like, we’ll customize it for you and bring you the
kitchen.

Meet Wurfel’s leading lady.

Anna Jimenez Morera is one of Würfel’s founding members and has been a key part of the brand’s success and achievements since its inception. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we spoke to Anna on her challenges as a woman in a leadership position, her reason for joining the modular kitchen industry, and her vision for the brand. Here’s what she had to say.

  1. What sparked your interest in this field?

I believe it happened gradually. My mom was a working-woman who juggled the balancing act of a full-time job and taking care of the home, very well. I always noticed her interests and attention-to-detail when decorating the house, bringing in useful things, utilising space, and not just randomly decorating for the sake of it. My interest piqued with my dad’s contribution towards the technical side. He was always actively looking for things to do with the furniture, whether it was assembling pieces, or restoring a piece of furniture, he was always very precise and knew exactly what was needed.

I remember this one time I wanted to change my bed. So we went to an old market and bought an old bed, restored it, painted it and made it as good as new. In Spain, we have a thing for antiques and rustic furniture.

All these factors made me realise just how big a job my mom was doing and how important it was for her to have storage in place. Since she could not shop everyday, it was essential to have good storage space with moisture-free cabinets to help keep things for longer.

  1. Can you tell us a memory from your childhood that helped shape the woman you are today?

Well, there is not one memory or one occasion, but a number of such events. The inspiration has always come from my superwoman – my mom. Seeing her juggle her responsibilities so well – career, children, family, the home.

Her mother passed away when she was just 4, while her younger brother was just 2. So from a very young age itself, she had to take on the responsibility of looking after her younger brother and being a mother to him. She started working in her early teens to support and provide for the family.

Her strong determination to build a great family for herself, which she missed while growing up, led her to find a lovely man, my dad, and brought us together to become the happy family that we are today. She taught me to never settle for less. She is a warrior and I am very lucky and blessed to have her.

  1. Considering you’re not from India, you have the unique perspective of seeing how women get treated here versus in Spain. What would be the key differences?

The key difference is in how talent is viewed. In India, there are fewer leadership roles offered to women in middle and senior management, as compared to Spain. Skill development to take on senior roles and mentorship of this talent is not taken very seriously.

I feel HR could do more with their policies to support women – such as adequate maternity cover, representation in the industry, changing HR panel discussions, stronger and stricter policies for harassment.

  1. What it’s like being a female leader in a company like Würfel,in an emerging market like India’s?

Being a leader in a company like Würfel has made me realise that leadership skills are universal. The ability to inspire, influence change and drive company results are universal objectives of male and female leaders. The key difference lies in middle management to senior roles, where the ratio is skewed. In meetings and in offices, I feel the responsibility to represent both, the expat woman and the woman.

Representation is the only way to bring about true change, so I am constantly looking at ways of bringing in more professionals with culturally diverse backgrounds, be it male or female.

Being a leader, I look at the best industry practices world over, and use them to positively influence the way of working, interacting, and functioning at Würfel.

Working in this industry also gives me the chance to deal with Real Estate and construction, where again you don’t see a lot of women. It’s a mindset I hope to see a change in.

Calicut Showroom Launch

Kerala is well known for its rich beauty and cultural heritage. Whether it’s the calming backwaters, exotic landscapes, or its serene beaches. With an aim to add to its beauty, Würfel recently launched its second showroom in Calicut.

Unlike most other showrooms, this boutique outlet was built where previously there existed an independent villa. So even before we launched, we had to put our European design sensibilities and expertise to use, to convert the villa into the top-of-the-line modular kitchen showroom it is today.

We launched the event with many of the city’s most respected builders and architects in attendance. As we took them through everything on display – L-shaped kitchens, U-shaped kitchens, island kitchens, and designer wardrobes, most were left awestruck by the end of it. In total, we showcased six kitchens and three of our wardrobes at the event.

Among the innovations on show were our nanotechnology-powered, scratch-resistant kitchens – kitchens on which scratches can be healed by the mere swoosh of a steam iron, and soft-close drawers – drawers that shut without as much as a peep, no matter how hard you slam them. It was met with loud applause, genuine appreciation and a sense of curiousness for how we achieve such perfection.

And it’s this drive for innovation that has today made Würfel one of India’s fastest growing modular kitchen and wardrobe brand.

Würfel’s appetite for success means the brand also uses its design intelligence and European expertise to create state-of-the-art wardrobes, designed to maximize space wherever you place them – an L-shaped corner or around windows, to make the best use of space in your room.
